Question: Cost to put a game on XBOX

Postby randyness » Tue Oct 26, 2010 2:46 pm

Ok, I have a few consultant that I well... consult with. One has shipped a AAA game. I was reviewing our business plan with him and he informed me that I had not included the 1-2 million dollars it cast to get the game on XBOX. This is the first time this has hit my radar and I have done loads of research. I asked a mentor of mine and he said that it was a cost added in recent years that you had to "deposit" in order for XBOX to make the CDs.

Obviously increasing my business plan by 1 to 2 million dollars is not ideal for potential investors so I would love to hear of anyone who could settle this for me. I cant go before investors until I get this settled.

Not sure what you are actually asking, but this comes to my mind by quick.

1. Is it necessary to make the XBOX version right away? Or is it possible to first release it on PC (no extra cost) and then make the XBOX version after it have shown it has potential? I do understand this wouldnt be best possible choice since piracy would have already ate lot of sales by that time, but it would be easier for investors.

2. You can show investors 3 different plans.

Plan A is to make PC version, naturally you tell them ho much money they would be missing on that one.

Plan B is to put that 1-2 million extra dollars for XBOX and get lot of money out of it potentially.

Plan C is something that includes plan B but puts on top of it a lot of stuff too, like NDS, PS3, Wii versions, and includes extra 1-3 million investment on top of plan B.

This way representing, they might start looking at plan B as the nice middle ground version.

have you looked into the xna game creators club? ,though it seems to be renamed apphub now ,it costs about $100. it allows development for PC,XBOX,and Windows 7 Phone. Not sure but this may limit your usable languages to C# and your distribution to online. It also isn't extremely clear but this may also be limited to indie developers(not sure of your situation). I haven't developed specifically for the xbox so I have never needed to buy access to this, but the xna framework isn't extremely hard to use if you can find some good tutorials.

Thank you guys for your suggestions, we are almost done with a 9 month demo so it really would be unfair for me to steer the team in a totally different direction. I have looked into releasing in stages and we may do that. I really need to know that cost and if it is real though.

As to XNA. XNA is really good for getting your name out there as a developer. We looked into it and were going to ask for investment so that I could pay my guys to work on a XNA game. (I even have a game design all written up with a few assets and concept art). We canned this project though. After doing alot of digging and calling around I found out that the largest selling XNA Game sold 5 thousand copies in 1 year. The XNA games sell by points, the largest amount equalling roughly 5 dollars.

So 5 thousand units times 5 dollars is $25k. This would not pay well for a 6 month project even with a team of just a project manager, programmer, a sprite artist, environment artist, and animation specialist.

We will revisit this option at some point just for recognition posibilities but I could never ask investors to look at it because they would lose money.

One thing I have found in working with volunteers and interns is that the guy calling the shots gets project ADD and starts jumping around then the workers tend to split pretty quickly.

When you say Xbox you mean box-on-shelf, correct? As opposed to strictly XBLA?

If you mean box-on-shelf, then yes, expect to spend that money. Typical shovel-ware projects spend 1/2+ of their total budget on putting the product on the shelf.

Your target market will be more likely to buy a game in one of the typical delivery methods and you can reverse engineer a business model based on the ideal consumer. In theory the game design plays to this as well, especially if you're talking micro-transactions or DLC you'll have to hammer this to survive.
