A Yottabyte of Storage Per Year by 2013

Postby kenman » Wed May 07, 2008 10:08 am

"David Roberson, general manager of Hewlett-Packard's StorageWorks division, predicts that by 2013 the storage industry will be shipping a yottabyte (a billion gigabytes) of storage capacity annually. Roberson made the comment in conjunction with HP introducing a new rack system that clusters together four blade servers and three storage arrays with 820TB of capacity. Many vendors are moving toward this kind of platform, including IBM, with its recent acquisition of Israeli startup XIV, according to Enterprise Strategy Group analyst Mark Peters."

What's after a yottabyte, a wookiebyte or a lukeskywalkerbyte?

is that equal to 6.023 x 10^23 uncompressed wav files of music??

At the risk of being overly pendantic (is there any other kind? ;) ), according to this story, the article you quoted is in error regarding its description of a yottabyte.

Wouldn't it be like HP to not know what a byte is, or storage?

I remember reading a small ad once where an HP was being offered with 80 Gigabytes of Ram and 512 Kilobyes of hard drive space...

Those of you lucky enough to have a terabyte are 1,000,000,000,000 times short of a yottabyte. In terms of Dual Layer DVDs, you'd need to build a stack high enough to reach the moon ... and back ... and there again ... and... (SNIP: 396 trips) ... and finally back again .... just to have a yottabyte worth of data. A stack of 3.5" floppy discs with 1,000 yottabytes would be tall enough to make it to the sun. 14 Million times.

I can't wait for 2013 :D.

Yes a Yottabyte is a billion million million bytes...

So a lukeskywalkerbyte would be a stack of blu-ray DVD's from here to Alpha Centuri and back twice right?

So screen resolution will be 14,000,000 x 10,000,000 and video cards will have 40GB of memory???

And a little green muppet will control your CPU?

The real question would be, are you able to *find* anything on your 1YB drive. :D

I honestly think that is the killer app of the first half of the 21st century.

I agree. I mainly use good organizational skills, but when there's too many files in a folder, I use locate or Spotlight. If I had a terabyte, I'd probably use a better searching app.

Isn't HP saying they'll do a YB annually, meaning if you add up all the HD they sell in 2013, it will be a YB?

yottabyte? seriously, these guys have no imagination. There could be a million cooler names for this kind of stuff than "yottabyte" And uh... CPUfreak... are you gonna need all of those floppy discs or can I borrow a few? (lol, I don't even think there's a computer in our NEIGHBORHOOD that still runs floppy discs)

There was actually a movie about this, I can't remember much about it, but it was a 70's or early 80's thing and the computer 'god' was the size of a room with 2" by 2" lighted panels.......

I do think we need to rename all of the storage terms after star wars characters

YodaByte
VaderByte
JediByte

I wonder how many GB's the deathstar had? :?

(lol, turns out the reason why it got destoryed was because they were running windows 98 and the deathstar ran a single core processer with 546 mb of RAM and had a hardrive of 1 GB. that would be funny)

Start designing a game for it, cause it'll probably happen within your lifetime.
