I am using The Gimp. I draw each frame and set up the layers accordingly.

Work Update:

Been working the running frames, should have them locked and loaded tonight.

And here is the running animation with the character drawn in!

That was ALOT of work. And considering its uncharted territory for me, I think I leveled up on my drawing and animation skills haha. My next step is to do attack animations for that character. Then do all the same with one monster. And then the level design. Ughhh so much work left yet.

It will be interesting to see it all colored in, it's looking good. Does the head pivot forward in one frame? I think it would be better if the direction of the face would stay the same in all of the movement frames, otherwise it would seem like a headbanger rocking out while they run.

Yeah, in some of the frames his head has a tilt movement upwards, then goes back down. I thought it would be cool but It has bothered me a bit, and Im going to end up fixing it. Also there is another error in the animation, and its that the arms should move in opposition to legs when running, and here they are moving together. For example, if my right leg is thrust forward, my left arm should thrust forward aswell, while the right arm moves back along with the left leg. Here the right arm moves with the right leg, and the left arm moves with the left leg. Its wierd haha. I thought I had it covered while drawing the frames, becuase I had noticed it, but as I continued working I forgot about it.

Day 10 - Production Phase Continued

So, today I should continue on with the animations for a monster. Then I'll need to work the level and then put both the Hero and the Monster in the game. After that, I have to code in the attack animations. Im thinking about how to slice somethings becuase its already tuesday, and I need to turn in the game on Saturday and there are several things left to be done, so, I need to work quick without the quality of my game being affected much. If I had started on July 4th or maybe even on the 1st, maybe Id be on time, but I started on the 6th and working alone is pretty hard!

Well, no monster animations were done today :(. But I did finish the attack animations for the Hero. With that wrapped up, the monster animations are next.

Thanks! After the speedgame challenge is over, Id love to do some inbetween animations for that to really smooth it out and give it more impact.

Day 11 - Production Phase Continued

Well, today was spent doing one of the Monsters movement and attack animations. Due to time constraints, and needing to implement the movement, attack and damage code ASAP, I went ahead and did some movement and attack animations for an orb like monster I sketched out yesterday, which is when I also sketched out some possible animations for two other monsters and my hero. With one monster done, and my heros animation done aswell, I then did the level tiles and put them in game maker. So you should all get a look at the game later tonight with nice textures and the placeholders removed.

Here are the tiles so you can get a look at them! As well as the "Dark Orb" movement and attack animations.

I'll post it all ingame later tonight!

Day 13 - Production Phase Continued

Well, today should be my last day putting in assets in the game and writing code. Yesterday I was busy fixing a few things that were bothering me till now. There is still a slight bug but Im going to need to ignore it for now and move on with the next things I haven't implemented yet. Tommorow as my final day should be spent polishing, and adding whatever can be added in time. Then turn in the project.

Day 14 - Production Phase Continued

Well, this certainly has been an interesting challenge for me, and an interesting two weeks! I got character attacks to work with a combo, and implemented my monster with his animations. Still having some issues with his code so im busy sorting that out. Going to do that, then fully construct the level and then it should be wrapped up! Here is the enemy fixed up as compared to the concept I uploaded several days ago just so you can see how it looks now.
