Switching Careers and Ethical Issue

Postby brandav » Sat Apr 19, 2014 6:38 pm

So I'm switching my career from accounting to software engineering. I taught myself basic C++ and Objective C, but I don't really have the money to get a degree in computer science. Lately, I've been looking for internships, and I've been able to find a local gaming company that has a few internships available for the summer. The only issue is that by "gaming" they mean casino games. They are working on some iOS projects which is exciting, but as a Christian, I'm not sure how I feel about building games that feed people's addictions. Then again, building any game could be considered to be feeding people's addictions. However, this could be slightly more serious. What do you guys think about working for this type of company? Would you work them?

Well, what is addiction in games?

The way I look at this, people go to games to escape. Now, there are other reasons. Gambling addictions are usually fed by debt.

The games themselves don't deliberately cater to escapism though (well actually, there are some that borderline it). They weren't written for escapism.

Gambling games are, I believe, entirely different though. Maybe I'm too pessimistic, but I tend to think they are written primarily for people with addictions.

For some kind of comparison, an example of a gambling game that I would be fine to make would be, say, poker. There is clear value in the game itself, although money is key to the gameplay.

Hmmm, yeah. I hate to say the obvious, but you just need to pray about it and see what gives you peace. There is no telling that you won't touch someone's life there. But, no doubt, this can be a tough decision. I had this dilemma when I was out of work and one potential job was with a company making software for slot machines. I did struggle through things in my mind.

Are there other opportunities available? Have you interviewed there yet?

God knows the right position for you. He is already going before you and preparing a place for you. I pray your eyes are opened to where He is leading.
